Job Searching

September 10, 2010

The article “10 Job Search Tips for 2010” brings up some very interesting and interrelated points about the job market and its changes.  Two main ideas that hold true throughout the article are that people looking for a job today must be willing to adjust their lifestyle and be willing to adjust to uncomfortable situations.  These two ideas are very important for people searching for jobs to keep in mind.

The article harps on being able to adjust their lives in order to better their position.  One of the tips given is to “know thyself.”  This is very important for people to understand.  Life is often about adjusting to situations you are put into.  Sometimes a person’s interests change in life and what you were once happy doing no longer keeps you happy.  If somebody is no longer happy doing the job he or she currently holds, that person should pursue a job that would make him or her happy.  This leads into the second point that holds true throughout the article, that people must be willing to put themselves in uncomfortable situations.  People are often hesitant to change their life despite believing that there may be better options out there for them.  If somebody does one thing for his or her entire life it can be very difficult to pick everything up and start a new career path.  Sometimes the best way to find out who you truly are is to put yourself into uncomfortable situations and see how you react to them.  This can tell you whether or not a job or an interest is truly for you.  No matter how educated a person is, many times that person is not completely prepared to start a new job.  Companies hire people knowing that they are not completely prepared to perform their duties without faults.  These companies hire people who have shown the ability to perform similar duties through their educational performance and previous work experience and know that they are going to have to teach their new employees certain things about the job in order for these employees to perform their tasks successfully.  The most important thing for people to keep in mind while searching for a job is that people must often go through uncomfortable situations in order to find their true calling in life.

Pat – the “elephant in the room,” as the article says, is the current economy, which is the worst job market for college grads since — well, since I was looking for post-undergraduate jobs in 1991! It’d be interested to hear from other readers whether they think the advice given in the article is strictly 2010, or whether it would apply more broadly even in better economic times.

I thought the article revealed a very important key to the job world today – adaptation. Adaptation is a very strong quality that requires workers to be able to change and adjust to the ever changing world that we live in, and it is a knowledge that is only learned through experience. If you can master this quality, I believe it will take you very far in life and work.
